hmmm, seems a little serendipitous that I wrote all that and then erased it! Should I take that as a sign?
I feel like I can come across as preachy when i get into art philosophy so please take it only at face value and as my own conclusions (not even really conclusions as much as rest areas on this art path thing).
#1) “cohesive” and “not cohesive” seem to be terms of art industry/higher education/ and purists/idealists. Jeff Koons, Andy Warhol, Matisse, Janine Antoni, and many many other artists spring to mind with the bravery to extend beyond the one piece that brought them to fame. Cohesive is your voice in art, your fingerprint, your style, your particular handwriting, your eye, color choice, etc. It’s not making the same piece over and over again. It’s exploring subject matter through your own unique vantage point.
#2) Your unique vantage point can easily be skewed by focusing on a piece that garnered a lot of praise, or another artists work whom you admire. Your vantage point is neither of these and will be recognized for what it is, not for what it replicates.
#3) Fame and popularity are not the equivalent of success, and unfortunately money isn’t either. Success is making a valid point with a heart and mind full of integrity and it may not bring praise or applaud, but is that feeling when a piece is complete where you exhale and know you’ve made a piece of art. Which brings me to #4
#4) Not everything you make/draw/paint/sculpt/craft is a work of art. Some are studies, some are practice, some are just plain worth discarding. Some, the fewest things made, are in fact art. But since art is subjective, the artist is the one who can discriminate between these, and that’s a terribly difficult role. Is it lasting, is it meaningful, is it true in it’s intent?
so these are my mantras and meditations lately as I work. I think they touched a little on what you’re questioning, and then meandered all over the place, but thought I would put them out there to see what you think and have to add/subtract?
I’ll post them to the blog, they’ll be in typed form until I can get home and scan them in. ..
